Guest lecturer John F. Sopko, special inspector general for Afghanistan Reconstruction will deliver "An Existential Threat: U.S. Oversight of and Responses to Corruption in Afghanistan at Noon, Wed. March 30 in room 3911, Posvar Hall.

Inspector General Sopko’s presentation will focus on how to train future generations of America’s foreign policy professionals to deal with complex problems in insecure environments. His visit coincides with the launch of a new graduate concentration in GSPIA focused on Governance and International Public Management.

 

 

John F. Sopko was appointed as Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) in 2012 and came to the post with more than 30 years of experience in oversight and investigations as a prosecutor, congressional counsel and senior federal government advisor. During his tenure at SIGAR, Mr. Sopko has almost revolutionized the techniques of public oversight of US stabilization and reconstruction efforts. Mr. Sopko previously served on the staffs of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Select Committee on Homeland Security, and the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. In addition, Mr. Sopko previously held positions at the Department of Commerce and served as a state and federal prosecutor. In the early 1980s, he received the Justice Department’s Special Commendation Award for Outstanding Service to the Criminal Division and the department’s Special Achievement Award for Sustained Superior Performance.
